The Unspoken

Why do you think people get caught up in cult life? What things can attack people to into joining a cult? What could people be looking for if they want to join a cult? Many of you argue that religion is a type of a cult. Do you agree or disagree? Why?

How do you suppose cults began? Who do you think get caught up in cult life? Why? In the book, why do you think Allison has the nightmare? What do you think happened to Emma?

Why do you think the characters in the story are so fearful of Jacob Crawley, the cult's leader? Do you think Jacob is responsible for all of the "accidents" that are taking place in the book with the formers members of the cult? Explain...I am also curious about some of your comments from the other day when you said that any religion is a cult. Could you talk a bit more about that? Do you really feel that organized religion is the same or similar to a cult? I am very interested in your thoughts!

We read the article in People Magazine about the religous group in Texas. Do you think there are any similarities or any differences between the two groups? What is your opinion about the religous group in Texas?

From Rachel:

I think people are in cults becuase they want to experience their life a little bit better. Some things attack people by saying the wrong thing and that might hurt someone feelings.

I believe many people go into or are brought into because there is something missing in there life or there lonely and want to be part of something or be noticed. People can bring you in by pressure by friends or family. In my opinion it is because there lost maybe some go for religion but a lot go for how there brought up or loneliness.

When people joint or get involved in cult because in their life are a lone and most people don’t care about them. After you joint the cult if you joint the wrong cult that will take over your personal life it mean that cult is wrong and if they try to make you feel bad about your self than the cult is wrong. I disagree because religion you can choose to belief but cult if you leave the people of the cult will never talk to you again

I think people get caught up in a cult if their life is a mess and they feel they have no power. People that seem to offer happiness and an answer to other people’s problems could attack people into joining a cult. If people want to join a cult they could be looking for a cult that fits them, that has all the answers and has good leadership. I believe that being in a cult is a religion but not a very good one. Cults believe in complete control and in a violent matter. Religion should be peaceful and always have more answers because in a cult you can’t ask any questions in a cult so you're pretty much supposed to just know all the answers and it you don’t then you are not considered complete or holy or spiritual enough.

Cults could begin with some lonatice that thinks he can have an influence on people. People that have trouble in their life might turn to a cult as well as people who feel they have nothing left in their life. In the book I think Allison has that nightmare because the is something supernatural going on. I think Emma either killed herself, someone killed her or something killed her in that torterous and cuel way.

I think they get caught in the cult life because they have no one there telling them the stuff they wanna hear because the people in the cult. They brain watch everyone, I agree because when people go to church, everyone goes on the same day and time and all believe in the same stuff.

I think they began when someone knows that they can talk people into doing something they want.

No i dont believe that Jacob did all them but i believe that he knew about them and help planned them, I think organized religion is a similar to a cult because if you think about it. I think we should do a compare and contrast

From Dom

I think that people jointing the cult because may be they try to get away from something or in their normal life have nothing going on with their life and those will leading them to jointing cult, but if you jointing the wrong cult they might hurt you in emotion and physical way.
I disagree that religion is a cult because all religion tell you to be good and they have some kind of prove that tell you that religion is might be real but not cult

Julian thinks:

I think people get caught up in cult life because of fear. Things that attack people with out a "cult-membership" are attacked by superiors. Not just superiors, but superiors that arent afraid to stand up and do what they have to do to get their point across. This means it could be from simple assaults, to mass murdering. I dont think people look for anything in a cult, they are just looking for the IDEA of a sense of companionships. I do agree, although, that religion is most certainly not a cult. Religion is someones idea of living that go back to when the earth started to come about. There isnt any forceful threats, or physical/mental abuse in religion.
